Ockham’s Razor specialises in creating physical theatre on original equipment, creating stories of vulnerability, trust, and reliance between physical performers.

Rather than portraying circus performers as superhuman, the company crafts work grounded in the human and real, where characters navigate relatable experiences, emotions, and conflicts. Their shows aim to be both exciting and moving, often inspiring audience members to say, “I wanted to come on stage with you.”

Formed in 2004 after meeting at Circomedia, Bristol, Ockham’s Razor partnered with Turtle Key Arts as producers in 2006. Described as “Britain’s most innovative aerial theatre group” (Total Theatre), they were the first British company funded by Jeunes Talents Cirque (now CircusNext). Their debut full-length programme premiered to sell-out audiences at the 2007 London International Mime Festival.

Since then, they have performed globally, earning a reputation for innovative, emotive, and accessible performances. The name Ockham’s Razor reflects their simple, focused approach, inspired by the medieval philosopher’s principle of eliminating unnecessary elements.

Trust is central to their work. The company is committed to an inclusive, equitable, and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Ockham’s Razor is a partner company with The Lowry, Salford, and arts depot, North Finchley, and is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

Crying Out Loud and Ockham’s Razor

Crying Out Loud has a long-standing relationship with Ockham’s Razor, supporting their creative growth and regional engagement. In 2010, through our Pass Circus Channel project, we were able to include Ockham’s Razor in a week-long residency dedicated to British work at Cherbourg’s creation centre La Brèche. In 2012 we commissioned a short film about them as part of Circus Post and in 2017, their show Tipping Point was presented by us at Auch Fest in France as part of Spotlight UK circus in 2017

Since we relocated to the Solent area in 2023, Okham’s Razor has been providing professional masterclasses in Portsmouth, enhancing connections to their performances and fostering skills among local circus artists through hands-on exploration of new equipment and creative techniques.
