A roller skating and dance project for displaced communities in Portsmouth.
Skates4Mates is a dynamic project that unites displaced people in Portsmouth through roller skating, offering a platform for creative expression and a sense of belonging within a supportive community.
Initiated by artist Jennifer Irons, Skates4Mates invites migrant communities to engage, share experiences and express themselves through roller skating and dance. Jennifer’s own journey as an immigrant inspired the creation of this inclusive space, aiming to help those who often feel isolated in their new environment. For many displaced people, settling in the UK can be difficult, especially when placed in temporary accommodation with limited opportunities to connect. Skates4Mates addresses this challenge by creating an open, welcoming space for people to come together.
Supported by Crying Out Loud, Majid Dhana of 432-Nomads worked closely with the community, enabling participants to express themselves, break down barriers, and build relationships. Seed-funded by the Arts Council, the project is supported by Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth City of Sanctuary, and South East Dance.
Skates4Mates is linked to Jennifer Irons’ new show, Bad Immigrant. Participants have the unique opportunity to attend the premiere, connecting their personal experiences with the performance’s themes of migration and belonging. They will also host their own roller jam event in Portsmouth.
Skates4Mates offers more than just an activity; it’s a creative, inclusive experience that transcends identity and fosters connection.
The project is part of Crying Out Loud’s Solent Creative Collaborations programme.
