For circus artists, producers, programmers, venues, festivals and cultural partners. A day of discussion, practical insight and performance exploring how contemporary circus can travel, adapt and connect with audiences in changing times.

“A Different Kind of Balance”

Bringing together artists, producers and partners from across the sector to share case studies, practical insight and discussion.

Part of The Point Is Portsmouth (TPIP), Crying Out Loud’s programme contributing to Portsmouth100, Circus in Motion explores how contemporary circus can activate heritage spaces, connect communities and build new artistic relationships. This micro-conference opens up some of the ideas and questions emerging through that work.

Three conversations exploring the future of circus:

  1. Can ‘Concept Touring’ offer new models for more sustainable touring?
An introduction to concept touring through a practical case study exploring lower-carbon, adaptable touring models. Led by Sud Basu from Third Version Creative, long-term partner of Crying Out Loud.
  2. How can we have Circus for EveryBODY?
What could a more representative, inclusive and ambitious future for circus look like? This conversation explores work made with, by and for D/deaf, disabled and non-disabled artists and audiences, considering visibility, artistic leadership, access and how the sector can evolve. Including perspectives from Head Over Wheels and Extraordinary Bodies, with further speakers to be announced.
  3. How can circus activate heritage spaces and connect communities?
This conversation explores how circus can reimagine heritage spaces, create shared civic experiences and strengthen connections between people and place. Chaired by Pam Vision (Arts Council England), with perspectives from Rachel Clare (Crying Out Loud), Vicki Dela Amedume (Upswing) and Billy Alwen (Cirque Bijou). Further contributors to be announced.

The day concludes with Circus in Motion, a contemporary circus takeover across Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Experience performances from leading UK and international artists across historic spaces and unexpected locations.
