Thanks to the support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, Circus250: Diverse • Real • Physical, a European collaboration between Crying Out Loud, Subtopia, Cork Midsummer Festival and Le Plus Petit Cirque du Monde, kicked into action in November 2017 with a 10 day residency in Paris with UK hip hop collective Far From The Norm and European circus and dance artists.
The 10 day residency marked the beginning of the creation of a new work that has seen emerging and established artists from the UK, Ireland, Sweden and France working together in four European locations to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the modern circus.
Gaëtan Lévêque from Collectif AOC, has introduced Far From The Norm to circus skills and together the artists have devised a fresh vocabulary and created a new and relevant piece of work, Union Black.
Union Black is a vibrant mix of dance-theatre and circus from critically acclaimed hip hop collective Far From The Norm and a selection of Europe’s best hip hop dancers and circus artists.
With a breathtaking combination of the dancers’ fast-paced footwork and physical routines, alongside the strength and skill in Chinese pole and tightrope of the circus artists, the show channels one of the globe’s favourite sports – football – to tackle questions about Europe both before and after Brexit.
This athletic, energising and funny show, complete with a pumping soundtrack, has been created especially for each location in which it has been performed.
Expect the artists to tear up the stage…..and the rule book.
Union Black will be performed as part of Circus Sampler at Somerset House on 28 & 29 July.
