The Forgotten / L’Oublié(e)

Following its successful run at this year’s Brighton Festival, Crying Out Loud brings Raphaëlle Boitel’s The Forgotten/L’Oublié(e) to the Abbey Theatre, Dublin for its Irish premiere.

An epic work at the cutting edge of contemporary French circus, which also fuses theatre and dance in equal measures, The Forgotten / L’Oublié(e)  is the directorial debut of Raphaëlle Boitel, one of the most remarkable performers on the European visual and physical theatre scene.

The Forgotten / L’Oublié(e)  plunges you into a dreamlike world of flight and fantasy to tell a tale of yearning and discovery. A woman searches for the man she loves. Wandering through the ruins of his memory, she encounters moments of ecstasy, secret dreams and haunting apparitions.

With extraordinary physical prowess, the company of six performers fly, glide and dive against an impressive yet stark theatrical landscape. Cleverly fabricating illusions from everyday materials, they bring inanimate objects to life and conjure scenery from thin air to create a parallel world of startling beauty.

  • 'L’Oublié(e) is a stunningly beautiful piece – a mostly monochrome series of moving pictures that blends contemporary circus, dance and word-free visual theatre, all accompanied by a highly inventive lighting design, and an eclectic soundspace that merges ambient electronica with echoing snatches of old-world waltzes, tangos and torch-songs'

    Dorothy Max Prior, Total Theatre

  • ‘Highlights include Thiérrée, Camille Boitel and the wondefully lithe contortionist Raphaëlle Boitel - dressed in Liliane Boitel’s exquisite black and red costumes - rolling out the red carpet and performing breathtaking acrobatics.’

    The Stage (Junebug Symphony)

  • ‘A touch of Lynch here, a scent of Kate Bush’s gothic romanticism there, Raphaëlle Boitel and her company have presented an epic event at La Vilette. Featuring superb and imaginative moments they create an intimate sense of a memory in ruins. L’Oublié(e) is an experience that will live on in your memory.’

Raphaëlle Boitel is a well-known circus artist with an impressive CV. She started her career at the age of 13 and has toured with international artists particularly James Thiérrée on his productions The Junebug Symphony (La Symphonie du Hanneton) and La Veillée des Abysses.
