The first phase of The Blender Project took place in December 2010 at the Hangar Arts Trust circus rehearsal space in Woolwich, London. Over three days, the project brought together 5 mid-career contemporary dance choreographers with circus artists in an intensive creative laboratory situation, facilitated by Lea Anderson and Rob Tannion.
They set about discovering and dissecting their experiences, ideas, comfort zones and routines. Together the choreographers and circus artists experimented with the boundaries of their respective art forms, discovering the physical limits the circus performers went beyond dance and the emotive, narrative and aesthetic talents of the choreographers were imparted to circus. As the collaborative relationships progressed, they began creating a new vocabulary of physicality and expression in the extraordinary vignettes that they produced.
