Cancellation of The Nose Dive Assembly in Gosport

At Crying Out Loud, we are deeply committed to supporting high-quality visual, site-specific, cross-artform performance and upskilling projects. We are proud to support The Revel Puck Circus in bringing their unique performances and community activities to the Solent region. Therefore, we are profoundly sad that, despite our collective efforts and enthusiasm, it is not possible for the activities to proceed as planned in Gosport. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. Through the growing partnerships fostered during this project, we look forward to future opportunities to enrich our community with exceptional arts experiences.

Full statement from Revel Puck Circus:

We have taken the difficult decision to cancel our run of The Nose Dive Assembly in Gosport, after careful consideration and consultation with our local partners Hampshire Culture Trust, Crying Out Loud and English Heritage, and Arts Council England.

Central to our mission is bringing world-class contemporary circus and tangible engagement activities to communities who can sometimes face barriers to accessing culture. As an identified priority area, Gosport was one of these locations and we were so excited to welcome new audiences to our Big Top. This time we have been unable to reach enough people, soon enough, to go ahead with this run. As an arts organisation with no regular funding, we rely predominantly on ticket sales for our income, so to protect the financial viability of our organisation, and our ability to continue to do the work we do, we’ve had to take this decision to cancel.

We want to celebrate the great work that had been put into our outreach and wraparound activity, and highlight the broad scope of our activities beyond the performance alone:

In Gosport we were set up to engage:

  • 6 local people and 22 freelancers in employment on our site as part of our commitment to offer job opportunities to the communities we arrive in
  • 20 people in shadowing and workshop activities
  • 150 volunteers and cadets through English Heritage
  • 4,200 audience members
  • A commitment to 10% of our tickets available at £2 to improve financial accessibility in arts and culture.

We will continue our tour to the Ventnor Fringe on the Isle of Wight, where The Nose Dive Assembly will be playing 19th – 28th July. Audiences in Hampshire who were planning on attending in Gosport we encourage you to hop on the ferry, make the day trip and come to see The Nose Dive Assembly at the Ventnor Fringe.

As community and partnerships are at the heart of our ethos, we’d be remiss not to highlight another excellent circus soon to be in nearby Eastleigh. NoFit State will be touring Sabotage to Eastleigh 11th – 28th July. We highly recommend you book and go along.

The funding offered to the project from local cultural partners will not be drawn down, and we will be reallocating the funds received from Arts Council England to cover irrecoverable marketing costs already incurred and cancellation wages to our freelancer workforce.

We believe strongly that everyone should have access to high quality art and culture in their local area, and we are proud to be part of a continuing ecology across the UK of artists, venues, charities and consortiums that are working to achieve this mission. Despite the cancellation of this run, our commitment to continuing this work into the future does not waver. We’ll see you in the Big Top one day soon. – The Revel Puck Circus
